Spider Mites on Conifers/Leylandii

Hosts: Spruce, fir, juniper, pine, hemlock and others

Evidence: Foliage may appear mottled, stippled, flecked or off-colour. Conspicuous basal needle discoloration is often the first sign of a problem. Infested trees may appear brownish-gray, and needle loss may occur. Look for mites, starting in May and continuing on a periodic basis, by beating branches over white paper and examining the paper for reddish-brown mites, about the size of pepper grains. In heavy infestations, webbing may also be conspicuous.

Life Cycle: Winter is spent in the egg stage in needle axils, under webbing on stems or branches, or under bud scales. Hatching occurs in the spring. Under optimum conditions, mites can complete their life cycle in ten days. Each adult lays 40-50 eggs, and there can be several generations per year.

Management: Control is generally recommended if you find an average of 5-10 mites per branch. If you find many eggs, a superior oil spray in early spring when the buds are still dormant (hard and resinous) will provide control. Otherwise, spray with a registered insecticide in the spring and/or summer as soon as you find active mites in sufficient numbers to cause concern. Frequently, a second application 7-10 days later will be necessary unless the product is ovocidal. Early treatment, before populations build up, is most effective. Some chemical sprays are injurious to predatory mites.
Spider-Mites (Tetranychus spp.) are parasitic pests.
In cold winters, most will die off, but some eggs will survive and hatch in the Spring to renew the outdoor colonies. Others will be lucky enough to migrate into houses, barns, greenhouses and other buildings to continue growing and breeding.

Spider-Mites are very small, but can be recognized with the naked eye as tiny white-gray dots on the underside of leaves which appear in the presence of silky webs which harbor hundreds of eggs. Under magnification, they look like tiny, little spiders. "Two-Spotted" Spider-Mites (Tetranychus urticae) are very common and more hardy than some other varieties making them worthy adversaries. They can be differentiated from other species by the obvious black spots present on them.

Control of Spider-Mites can be arranged though the use of "organic" concoctions made up of Tobasco©® sauce, alcohol, tobacco, soaps, garlic, etc., but we have found that it is more practical and efficient to decimate the mite population using organic Pyrethrum(in/oid) sprays or insecticidal soaps as this allows for quick plant regeneration without the possibility of toxic shock occurring due to the buildup of control agents in the plants' tissues and surrounding soil. Another option is to import stealth assassin squads of predators including P. persimilis, A. fallacis, Feltiella, and Neoseilus californicus, but again, this option is not as fast-acting as the Pyrethrum spray. Pyrethrum sprays are supposed to be quite safe and non-toxic to humans, and he are reported to degrade quickly, but can also be rinsed off if desired.

Leyland Cypress
For fast growth, this single hybrid outstrips most. It reaches 20 feet in only 5 years, changing from a column to a narrow pyramid. Where summers are warm or hot, trees grow broader. Used as a tall hedge or screen, it is also planted in groves. Thrives in most soils and climates. Tolerates strong winds. Grown as a commercial Christmas tree, this blue-green conifer has flat sprays of scalelike leaves. In dry, hot climates, susceptible to spider mites. Prone to canker fungus and bagworm.
