May Gardening Jobs

May has arrived which means summer is well and truly on the way! It is the ideal time to make sure that all of the spring plants have been tidied up and the garden is looking pristine ready for the summer months to come where we can once again properly enjoy spending time outside in the warm weather. Take a look at our guide to find out the different jobs that can be completed during this month.

General Tasks for May

  • Continue controlling slugs and snails
  • Water plants when needed especially in increasing temperatures
  • Control weeds around the garden using appropriate weed control options
  • Late night frosts can still happen so make sure that tender plants are protected if any cold evenings are scheduled

Lawns / Turfed Areas

  • Check for disease and treat accordingly
  • Keep an eye out for pests and control when necessary
  • Control weeds using a selective weed killer
  • Dry soils or compost can become water resistant and starve the grass of moisture and nutrients. use a wetting agent to re-energise the soil - Amvista Soil Soaker
  • Continue to mow regularly
  • Apply suitable fertilisers/feeds
  • Overseed bare patches
  • Change positioning of garden furniture to avoid wear of the grass and compaction of soil

Trees, Shrubs and Hedges

  • Lightly trim Buxus (box) hedging and formal evergreens - May 5th or 'Derby Day' is the traditional start point for trimming box
    • Remember it is important to give the hedging a light feed or apply a slow release fertiliser after the trim - Arbor Gold
  • Prune spring-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering

Beds and Borders

  • Clear our spring-flowering bedding and prepare the ground for the new summer plants
  • Harden off summer bedding ready for planting
  • The sowing of perennials can begin outdoors
  • Fertilisers and nutrients are critical at this key growth stage
    • Add liquid seaweed to your normal watering regime for added vitality

Wall Plants

  • Tie in any new growth so it continues to grow in the correct way
  • Prune plants that have finished flowering such as clematis’

Water Features

  • Continue to check for algae and gain control
  • As the weather gets warmer it may be necessary to top up the water level if it has dropped
