Oak Processionary Moths - The dangers they pose

Oak Processionary Moths (OPM) are a pest that destroy the leaves of oak trees among others. Although the damage the moths can cause to tree is great, the caterpillars of these moths that nest in trees during the spring and summer pose a severe risk to human health. Their hairs contain a protein called Thaumetopoein which can trigger allergic reactions to human skin. These reactions can start as unpleasant itching followed by skin inflammation (such as hives or dermatitis), eye or respiratory tract irritation, fever and dizziness.

The Life Cycle of the Oak Processionary Moth

When is the best time to control Oak Processionary Moth and what works best?

As the OPM go through different life stages of development it is important to know when the best time to gain control is. It is recommended that you apply control methods when it is in its “active caterpillar stage”. On their normal life cycle this will be around April to the end of June.

At ProGreen we recommend the use of Dipel DF or Bruco at this stage. These products share the same active ingredient and are safe to other insects and non-target species making it the ideal, safe solution. The caterpillar specific bacteria causes them to stop eating and they will be controlled within 24-72 hours. – For further information on how to control Oak Processionary Moth, check out our detailed by problem page.
