Removing Tree Stumps

Removing Tree Stumps

Tree stumps can pose a challenge when it comes to removing them from your land and preventing them from regrowing. However, there are options that you can take when you are deciding on a control method.

Using EcoPlugs

Ecoplugs are an effective way of removing tree stumps and can be used in any weather throughout the entire year.

In order to insert the Ecoplugs into the tree stumps you first need to drill holes using the Ecoplug drillbit into either the top or the side of the tree stump. The number of Ecoplugs needed per stump depends on the diameter and species of the stump – see the table below for more information.

If drilling into the top of the stump, is important to drill the holes as close to the bark as possible due to the fact that the tree’s transport system is directly adjacent to the bark. Once the holes have been drilled you can then insert the Ecoplugs making sure that the thicker end is protruding outwards. Then, using a hammer, drive the Ecoplugs in completely so that its head seals the drilled hole. This will cause the herbicide to release.

To achieve best results, stump treatment should be carried out within two days of when the tree has been felled.

Tree Stump Weed Killers

At ProGreen we offer a range of weed killers that can be used as a cut stump treatment. The best weed killers that can be used are those containing either glyphosate (Roundup ProActive, Roundup ProVantage, Gallup Biograde Amenity and Gallup Hi-aktiv) or triclopyr (SBK Brushwood Killer).

When it comes to applying the weed killer to the tree stumps it is always important to follow the manufacturers advice on the method of application they suggest (this can be found on the product label).

In the majority of cases, however, it is advised that treatment should be applied immediately after cutting trees down and can be used between the months of November and March/April. You should not use this method during the spring and summer due to there being active sap flow.

You should apply the weed killer (once diluted with water at the correct dose rate) by either spraying or painting the solution onto the stump ensuring that you are concentrating it in the outer ring of live tissue just beneath the bark.
