We need YOUR help to save the bees!

Bees are amazing insects that help to pollinate our fruit, vegetables and crops which puts the yummy food we eat everyday on our plates. Sadly, because there are fewer flowers and plants growing across the UK, bees and other insects are finding it hard to find their own food. For this reason, we all need to lend a helping hand to these fantastic insects and make them feel buzzing again!

What do bees need?

In order to stay healthy, bees need the three following things:

Food to eat

Something to drink

A place to rest or nest

The perfect food for buzzy bees:

Flowers are some of the best foods for bees. The flowers provide the bees with nectar which they eat and they also take the pollen from the flowers to feed their young. While the bees are feeding they are also helping to pollinate the flowers which helps more to grow!

What do bees drink?

Just like you and me bees need to drink water to stay healthy. Putting a small dish or a bowl with water in will give them a place to drink. You need to make sure that the dish/bowl does not go dry during the summer months because of the sun as this is when they will need a drink the most! If you have a pond or a bird bath this is also a great place for bees to have a drink but you need to remember to have safe places for the bees to land like a lily-pad as the water could be too deep for them.

Creating a hotel for bees

Why not get creative? Seeing as bees need a place to take a nap it seems only right that they should have their own hotel in your garden to take a pit-stop from their journey. Bees are known for liking small holes to rest in. To create the perfect hotel you can be as imaginative as you want. Upturning an old pot and filling it with hollow plant stems or bamboo canes along with dried grass will make a cosy home. You could even get a grown up to help you make holes in old logs for another place the bees can go.

Following all of these steps will help the bees in your area.
