Frequently Asked Questions

Can you scatter wildflower seeds on grass?

While sowing wildflower seeds on grass is possible, you need to be aware of the competition for nutrients which could affect the new growth of wildflowers. Also, good contact between the seed and soil is typically required, so we would recommend raking the soil to create a seedbed, rather than scattering the seeds. Read our seeding wildflower guide for more detailed information.

Which season is best to plant wildflower seeds?

The best season is spring to later summer into early autumn. If you’re looking for specific months to put in your gardening calendar, we recommend mid-March to mid-May or mid-August through to mid-October. That’s because consistent temperatures over 10°C create the ideal conditions for germination and growth.

What are the benefits of using a wildflower and grass seed mix?

What you really want to know is why not just wildflowers or grass? Well, the beauty of having both is that you get flowers to support UK pollinators in the summer, and then come winter when the flowers die back, you still have a base layer of grass that helps prevent weed growth and provides an attractive carpet of green all year round.

To achieve the perfect mix of grass and wildflowers, we recommend the A1 Lawn Wildflower Partner Grass Seed in combination with one of our pure wildflower mixes or a purpose-built mix containing 80% grasses and wildflower species.

What type of wildflower seeds do I need if I want the flowers to return every year?

If you want the flowers to return every year, we recommend buying seed mixes that contain "perennial" seeds. Perennials flower in the second or third year, and in the following years, whereas annual plants flower in the first year but won’t bloom again.

Do I need a different seed mix for SFI compared to domestic wildflower planting?

Yes. Seed mixes used for SFI are designed specifically to meet DEFRA guidance and option criteria, whereas domestic wildflower mixes are selected for visual impact, flexibility and ease of establishment. Always choose a purpose-built SFI mix when sowing land entered into an agri-environment scheme.
