To achieve your best possible lawn, it is important to follow the guidelines on how to sow your grass seed.

Sowing a new lawn

  1. Dig the soil over to a depth of 20 to 30cm.
  2. Remove any large stones and weeds by hand.
  3. Add topsoil if the soil is poor quality or uneven.
  4. Rake the area to get a level seedbed.
  5. At this point, we recommend our Pre-Seed Fertiliser.
  6. If using fertiliser, wait one week before seeding.
  7. Sow at the recommended rate by hand or with a spreader.
  8. Rake the seed in so it is just under the surface of the soil.
  9. Apply a light layer of soil to improve germination and deter birds.
  10. Compact the surface by foot or by using a roller.
  11. Water well straight away and continue until established.
  12. Leaving the seeded area to dry out will delay the process.

Overseeding an existing lawn

  1. We recommend using our Feed, Weed & Moss Killer.
  2. If using the weed and feed, wait eight weeks before seeding.
  3. Rake to remove any dead grass, moss and weeds.
  4. Rake until the soil has loosened and is no longer compact.
  5. Sow at the recommended rate by hand or with a spreader.
  6. Rake the seed in so it is just under the surface of the soil.
  7. Apply a light layer of soil to improve germination and deter birds.
  8. Compact the surface by foot or by using a roller.
  9. Water well straight away and continue until established.
  10. Leaving the seeded area to dry out will delay the process.

Once you have sown your grass seed, we want to ensure you get the best possible lawn, so we have put together a quick guide of what to do for the first few weeks.

  1. Your lawn seed can take up to 6 to 8 weeks to fully establish.
  2. Remember to water your lawn well each day for those weeks.
  3. Avoid watering when continued rainfall is present.
  4. Continue until you have an even coverage throughout the lawn.
  5. Once the grass reaches 3 to 4 inches in height, it is ready for its first cut.
  6. Make the first cut on the highest setting to just take the top inch off.

Keeping your lawn healthy is important, and we recommend using our Seasonal Fertilisers regularly to keep the lawn green and disease and weed free.
