Storing Grass Seed and Fertiliser

Storing your lawn care products? Grass seed and fertiliser can lose their effectiveness if not stored properly, so read this guide on how to do it right.
Storing Grass Seed and Fertiliser

Cool & Dry

This is the golden rule for both your grass seed and fertilisers.  Moisture and humidity can cause your grass seed to fail at the time of use, excess moisture will also cause the seeds to rot or develop mould. With the same conditions as discussed with seed, fertiliser can also have serious issues such as beginning to clump or fail due to heat sensitivity.  Want to avoid this?

  • Keep them away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight
  • Store them in a garage, shed, or basement
  • Keep them from sitting on potentially damp floors, place them on shelves or pallets.

Avoid Frost and Extreme Temperatures

These products aren’t fond of extremes. Freezing temperatures can damage and prevent grass seeds from growing, and high heat can make your fertiliser less effective. Keeping them in a stable temperature environment is recommended.

Grass Seed Storage Tips

Grass seed is a natural product, so it won't last forever. Typically it will stay good for one to two years depending on harvest and how it is stored. Essentially seed's viability/germination rates drop over time so eventually become inactive, this is why it is best used sooner rather than later. For best results:

  • Use it as soon as possible - the fresher the better
  • Ensure the seed is stored back in a breathable bag when not in use.
  • Store in a cool dry place to keep germination potential intact

Fertiliser Storage Tips

Fertiliser has a longer lifespan than grass seed - roughly two to three years if you store it right. How long it will last is dependent on the fertiliser type and how you keep it. To get the most out of your fertiliser:

  • Reseal the packaging after each use
  • Keep it in a cool dry place to prevent it from breaking down or clumping up
  • Make sure it is in a well-ventilated storage area to avoid a build-up of fumes from certain fertilisers

Why We Don’t Guarantee Specific Lifespans

Whilst these tips can preserve the life of your product, we cannot give a definitive lifespan. Storage conditions vary widely, and even our suppliers don’t provide precise lifespans for their products. To ensure the best results, the best practice is to use your grass seed and fertiliser as soon as possible after purchase. But if you follow our above storage tips, you won’t go far wrong!
