Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) Seed Mixes
The Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) is designed to reward UK farmers for adopting environmentally friendly practices that enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, and create resilient landscapes. One key component of this initiative is the establishment of specific seed mixes, which help support sustainable farming while providing financial incentives for landowners.
At ProGreen, we offer a wide range of SFI-complaint seed mixes, from wildflower and nectar-rich pollinator blends to herbal leys, legume fallows, and grassland options. Each mix is carefully formulated to align with the scheme’s guidelines, helping farmers comply with their agreements while maximising land benefits.
The Importance of SFI-Approved seed mixes
SFI-compliant mixes are tailored to provide multiple benefits:
- Boost biodiversity – Create vital habitats for pollinators, farmland birds, and beneficial insects.
- Improve soil structure – Deep-rooting species enhance soil stability and nutrient retention.
- Reduce input reliance – Legume-based mixes naturally fix nitrogen, reducing fertiliser costs.
- Enhance farm resilience – Well-managed seed mixes contribute to sustainable, productive land use.
What SFI mixes are available?
At ProGreen, our Sustainable Farming Incentive range includes:
- Flower-rich margins & plots – Designed to encourage pollinators and beneficial insects throughout the season.
- Nectar flower mixes – High-diversity blends supporting bees, butterflies, and small mammals.
- Legume fallows – Multi-species legume-rich mixtures that fix nitrogen and suppress weeds.
- Herbal leys – A mix of grasses, legumes, and deep-rooting herbs to improve soil health and provide resilient grazing.
- Winter bird food mixes – Providing essential feed sources for farmland birds in colder months.
- Grassland and buffer strips – Protective margins that reduce nitrate runoff and soil erosion.
Each mix is fully compliant with SFI guidelines, ensuring eligibility for available grants where applicable. Explore our full range here.
If you have specific requirements, we also offer bespoke seed mixing options – simply contact us to discuss tailored solutions.
Are SFI payments still available?
While new applications to the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) are currently closed, farmers who have already signed up can still access their funding. If you have an existing agreement but have yet to sow your seed mix, now is the time to do so to remain compliant and maximise the financial benefits of the scheme.
DEFRA is reviewing plans for a revised scheme set to launch in 2026, which is expected to include further environmental land management incentives. Even if you’re not currently part of SFI, establishing wildflower margins, legume fallows, and herbal leys can still improve farm productivity and sustainability.
