How To Sow a New Lawn with Grass Seed

Growing a lawn from seed is one of the most cost-effective ways to create a thick, healthy lawn. With the right preparation, seed choice and aftercare, you can establish a lawn from seed that rivals turf at a fraction of the cost. In this guide, we explain exactly how to grow a lawn from seed step by step.

How To Sow a New Lawn with Grass Seed

Growing a lawn from seed is one of the most cost-effective and rewarding ways to create a beautiful garden. With the right preparation, grass from seed can establish quickly, delivering a thick, healthy lawn that rivals newly laid turf at a fraction of the cost.
At A1 Lawn, our extensive range of lawn seed includes premium options such as A1 Lawn Premiership Pro Grass Seed for creating a high-quality lawn from seed, as well as A1 Lawn Multi Purpose Grass Seed for general lawn establishment and repair.

Why sow a new lawn with grass seed?

Creating a new lawn with grass from seed gives you complete control over the establishment process and helps prevent patchy, uneven growth. A well-seeded lawn develops into a dense, healthy surface, offering improved appearance and durability.
Think of it like applying a second coat of paint when decorating – the extra coverage creates a fuller, richer finish. By choosing quality grass seed and following the correct sowing techniques, you'll give your lawn the strongest possible start.

When to sow grass seed?

Grass seed can technically be sown throughout the year, provided there is little risk of frost.
The best times to establish grass from seed are:

  • Spring (March to May)
  • Autumn (September to October)

These periods provide the ideal combination of:

  • Soil temperatures above 7°C, which encourages germination
  • Higher natural moisture levels from rainfall
  • Reduced stress from extreme temperatures

While summer sowing is possible, additional watering may be required to grow grass from seed during prolonged dry spells. Likewise, sowing during frosty conditions may reduce germination rates and affect overall establishment.

Step-by-step instructions for sowing a new lawn with grass seed

Follow our proven five-step process to give your new lawn the best chance of thriving.

Step 1: Prepare soil for a new lawn

Proper soil preparation is essential for any successful lawn from seed project.
Before sowing:

  • Remove weeds, stones and debris
  • Level the area
  • Loosen the top 1–2 inches of soil
  • Create a fine, crumbly tilth

We recommend applying Pre-Seed and Pre-Turf Fertiliser (NPK 6-9-6) approximately one week before sowing. This provides essential nutrients for early root development and strong establishment.

If rainfall is limited, water the fertiliser into the soil several times before seeding.

Top Tip
Keep the prepared area consistently moist when growing grass from seed. Evening watering is often most effective as less moisture is lost through evaporation.

Step 2: Sow grass seed

Once the soil is ready, evenly distribute the seed across the area using a spreader.
After sowing:

  • Work the seed gently into the top 1–2 inches of soil using the back of a rake.
  • Ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
  • Lightly compact the surface.

Working the seed into the soil helps:

  • Reduce bird damage
  • Improve moisture retention
  • Encourage stronger germination

If you do not have a lawn roller, place a plank or wide board across the area and walk over it to gently firm the soil surface.

For best results, always use a high-quality grass seed blend suited to UK growing conditions.

How much grass seed per square metre?

Most grass seed mixtures should be applied at approximately:

  • 35g per m²
  • A useful technique is to mark out a small test area first.

For example:

  • Create a 2m x 2m square
  • Weigh out four applications of 35g
  • Apply evenly across the marked area

This provides a visual reference for correct coverage across the remainder of the seedbed.

It's important to apply grass seed exactly as supplied and not dilute it with sand or other aggregates at this stage.

Step 3: Wait for the grass to grow

Patience is key when growing grass from seed.

Under suitable conditions, germination usually occurs within 7–21 days

This varies depending on:

During this period:

  • Keep the soil consistently moist
  • Avoid foot traffic
  • Allow seedlings to establish naturally

It's also common for dormant weed seeds to emerge after soil cultivation. Don't worry - these can be treated later using a selective lawn weed killer or a combined weed, feed and moss killer once the lawn has matured.

Step 4: Cutting a new lawn

When the grass reaches approximately 2–3 inches (5–7cm), it's time for the first mow.

The most important rule when growing grass from seed is that you don't cut the grass too short, only remove the top inch of growth during the first cut. Leaving plenty of leaf area helps:

  • Protect young plants
  • Encourage root development
  • Reduce stress on new grass

Some seed may still be germinating at this stage, so allow time for the lawn to continue thickening naturally.

Step 5: Fertilise new grass seed

Several weeks after germination, an additional application of fertiliser can help promote:

  • Stronger roots
  • Improved establishment
  • Healthier long-term growth

Any remaining pre-seed fertiliser can be used to give the young lawn a valuable nutritional boost.

Dealing with bare patches

If small thin areas develop:

  • Lightly spike or rake the surface.
  • Sow additional seed.
  • Keep the area moist.

Mixing the seed with a small amount of top dressing or sand during overseeding can help improve moisture retention and achieve more even coverage.

Please note that pre-seed fertiliser should only be applied between March and October and should generally be avoided during winter.

Best seed types for the different seasons

Choosing the correct grass seed variety can make a significant difference to establishment and long-term performance.

  • Strong wear tolerance
  • Excellent durability
  • Germination in soil temperatures as low as 5°C
