April Gardening Jobs
General Tasks for April
As temperatures rise, plant and weed growth accelerates, making early maintenance vital.
- Tackle weed growth: Weeds will begin to establish quickly. Apply an appropriate weed control product where necessary.
- Control slugs and snails: These common pests can cause major damage to young plants. Keep up with control methods throughout April. If you need advice on the most effective solutions, check out our slugs and snails guide.
Lawns & Turfed Areas
April is a key month for waking your lawn up after winter and preparing it for heavier summer growth.
Mowing
As the weather improves, increase mowing frequency. You can now begin to lower the cutting height slightly:
- 6–8mm for ornamental lawns
- Around 12mm for general-use lawns
Keeping mower blades sharp ensures a clean cut and reduces stress on the grass.
Weed and Moss Control
- Be watchful for weeds such as dandelions and clover. Use a selective weed killer to target broadleaf weeds without harming the grass.
- Moss can also spread quickly. Ensure good drainage, consider scarifying, and use suitable moss control treatments like Mac Hi-Power or AlgoClear Pro for hard surfaces and MossOff Lawn or Sul-Fe for grassed areas.
Fertilising
- A well-fed lawn is the foundation of a lush garden. Apply a spring summer fertiliser to promote strong root development and rich green colour.
- Our Spring Summer Fertiliser (NPK 10-4-4) is ideal. It provides high nitrogen for leafy growth and includes Iron, Magnesium Oxide, Calcium Oxide, and Seaweed for colour, strength and resilience.
Overseeding
Once weeds and moss are under control, overseed any thin or bare patches to thicken your turf and prevent weeds colonising exposed soil. Choose a seed mix suitable for your lawn's usage (high traffic, shaded areas, etc.).
Hard Surface Cleaning and Softwashing
- April is an excellent month for tackling paths, patios, driveways, walls, and roofs before algae and moss thrive in warmer weather.
- Products such as AlgoClear Pro and MMC Pro provide highly effective softwashing and surface cleaning results with minimal effort, helping maintain clean and safe outdoor areas.
Trees, Shrubs and Hedges
April is ideal for supporting both new and established plants:
- Water newly planted trees and shrubs, especially during dry spells, to help them establish strong root systems.
- Apply a slow-release fertiliser such as Arbor Gold to supply essential nutrients throughout the season.
- Plant conifers and broadleaved evergreen hedges – conditions in April support excellent establishment.
- Prune early-flowering shrubs once blooming is finished, and follow up with a feed to encourage fresh growth.
Beds and Borders
Keep beds and borders tidy and thriving with the following tasks:
- Stake tall-growing plants early to prevent damage in windy weather.
- Replant or add summer-flowering plants to ensure colour and vibrancy later in the season.
- For an all-in-one nutrient boost, try Amvista L9 Organic Fertiliser, enriched with seaweed for strong, healthy growth.
- Weed, clear debris, and improve airflow around plants to reduce disease risk.
- Cut back lavender, trimming only to just above new growth, and remove any dead or woody stems to maintain shape and encourage healthy flowering.
