How to Control Speedwell in Your Lawn

Speedwell (Veronica species) is a common broadleaf weed that spreads quickly across lawns if left untreated. It thrives in cool, damp conditions and is often one of the first weeds to appear in spring, forming low-growing mats with small blue flowers. Although it may look harmless, speedwell competes with grass for nutrients, light and moisture, weakening your lawn over time.

How to Identify Speedwell

Speedwell has a creeping growth habit with small rounded or oval leaves and delicate blue flowers. It spreads by both seed and rooting stems, allowing it to establish rapidly in thin or stressed turf.

How to Control Speedwell

Selective lawn weed killers are the most effective way to control speedwell without damaging grass. Products such as Praxys, Kurtail Lawn (for non-professional users) and Dicophar are designed to target broadleaf weeds like speedwell while allowing the grass to continue growing normally. These treatments work best when applied during active growth, typically from early spring through to early autumn.

For small patches, speedwell can also be removed by hand, ensuring the roots and creeping stems are fully lifted to prevent regrowth. This is easiest when the soil is moist.

Preventing Speedwell from Returning

Maintaining a healthy, dense lawn is the best long-term defence against speedwell. Regular mowing, seasonal fertiliser and proper aeration will help strengthen grass and reduce bare patches where weeds can establish. Improving drainage and avoiding soil compaction will also create less favourable conditions for speedwell to thrive.

Final Thoughts

Speedwell can spread quickly if ignored, but with timely treatment using products such as Praxys, Kurtail Lawn or Dicophar, and by improving overall lawn health, it can be effectively controlled. Consistent lawn care will help keep speedwell at bay and ensure your turf remains thick, healthy and weed-free throughout the growing season.
