Your A1 Lawn Autumn Lawncare Pack Product Guide

What Is the A1 Lawn Autumn Lawncare Pack & What Does it Contain?

The Autumn Lawncare Pack contains two products:

Together they address the two most important autumn lawncare priorities: delivering the right nutrients to strengthen roots before winter dormancy, and supporting soil biology to help grass cope with seasonal stress.

Why Does My Lawn Need Treatment In Autumn?

During autumn, grass stops prioritising leaf growth and starts storing energy in its root system instead. This is the lawn preparing itself for winter dormancy. If you apply the right nutrients at this point, you're supporting that process and sending the lawn into winter in the best possible condition.

If you skip autumn treatment, roots go into winter underprepared. The typical consequences are slow spring recovery, patchy or yellow regrowth, increased moss and higher susceptibility to frost damage and disease.

Autumn is one of the highest-impact points in the lawncare calendar precisely because the work you do now directly affects how the lawn performs for the next six months.

What Does the Autumn/Winter Fertiliser Do?

What is in the A1 Lawn Autumn/Winter Fertiliser?

Our autumn lawn fertiliser has an NPK ratio of 6-5-10 plus 6% iron (Fe). NPK stands for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) – the three primary nutrients in any fertiliser. The numbers refer to the percentage of each in the product.

Why does the autumn fertiliser have less nitrogen than spring products?

High nitrogen drives rapid leaf growth, which is exactly what you want in spring. In autumn, soft leafy growth is a liability – it's vulnerable to frost and disease. The autumn formula reduces nitrogen and increases potassium instead, because potassium strengthens cell walls, improves cold tolerance and builds wear resistance. It's about toughening the plant up rather than pushing it to grow.

What does potassium do for grass in autumn?

Potassium is the key ingredient in autumn lawncare. It helps grass cell walls become more robust, which directly improves the lawn's ability to handle frost, heavy foot traffic and wet conditions. Lawns that go into winter with adequate potassium levels recover faster in spring and show less winter damage overall.

Why does our autumn lawn fertiliser contain iron?

The iron content (6Fe) serves two purposes. It supports chlorophyll production, which helps your lawn maintain a green colour through autumn and winter rather than fading to yellow. It also has a mild moss-suppressing effect at soil level, making it a useful preventative measure during the wetter months when moss typically takes hold.

How do I apply the Autumn/Winter Fertiliser?

Apply evenly at 25–35g per m² using a lawn spreader for the most consistent coverage. Hand application is fine if done carefully. Apply before rainfall is forecast so the granules wash naturally into the soil. If no rain falls within 24 hours of application, water lightly each day until the granules dissolve – this prevents the risk of scorching.

When is the best time to apply autumn/winter lawn fertiliser?

The ideal window is late August to October, while soil temperatures are still above 5°C. Below that temperature, the soil becomes less effective at processing nutrients. Applying in early November is still worthwhile, particularly in southern England where soil stays warmer for longer, but the earlier you apply within the autumn window, the more effective it will be.

Can I apply the fertiliser by hand without a spreader?

Yes, a lawn spreader gives more even coverage, but hand application works if you take a methodical approach – divide the lawn into sections and work steadily to avoid over-applying in some areas and missing others.

What Does the Seaweed Extract Do?

What is a seaweed biostimulant and how is it different from a fertiliser?

A fertiliser delivers specific nutrients directly to the plant, while a biostimulant improves the lawn's ability to absorb and use nutrients, stimulating the microbial community in the soil. Healthier soil biology means better nutrient uptake, better drainage and a more resilient root system. Essentially, the seaweed extract amplifies the fertiliser.

Why use seaweed extract on a lawn?

Seaweed extract contains naturally occurring plant hormones, trace elements and polysaccharides that feed the organisms living in your soil. A biologically active soil processes nutrients more efficiently and supports stronger root growth. In autumn specifically, seaweed extract helps grass handle the stress of dropping temperatures and changing conditions – it improves resilience at a biological level rather than simply feeding the plant.

How do I apply the Seaweed Extract?

Mix 50ml with 2.5 litres of water to cover 10m². Apply using a handheld pressure sprayer or a watering can fitted with a fine rose head. It's gentle enough to use every two weeks throughout autumn without overstimulating growth.

Should I apply the fertiliser and seaweed at the same time?

You can apply them in the same session, but better results come from applying the granular fertiliser first, watering it in, and then following with the seaweed extract a few days later. This lets each product begin working before the next is introduced.

How often can I use the Seaweed Extract?

It's safe to apply every two weeks throughout autumn. Unlike a high-nitrogen fertiliser, it won't force excessive soft growth – it supports the lawn without overstimulating it, making it suitable for regular use through the season.

What's the Best Autumn Lawn Treatment Routine?

For best results, work through the following steps in order:

  1. Scarify or rake the lawn to remove thatch and dead material – late August to mid-September is ideal
  2. Aerate if the soil is compacted, to help both products penetrate effectively
  3. Overseed any thin or bare patches with A1 Lawn Multi Purpose Grass Seed while soil temperature is still warm enough for germination
  4. Apply the Autumn/Winter Fertiliser at 25–35g per m² and water in
  5. Apply the Seaweed Extract a few days later
  6. Continue applying the seaweed extract every two weeks through October and into November

What Other Products Help with Autumn Lawncare?

Mo Bacter Instant Organic Moss Killer and Lawn Feed

Mo Bacter is the right first step if moss is already established before you fertilise. It's 100% organic, fast-acting and breaks down dead moss into the soil rather than leaving a mess to rake out.

A1 Lawn Multi Purpose Grass Seed

Multi Purpose Grass Seed is ideal for overseeding thin or bare patches in early autumn while soil temperatures still support germination. Getting seed down before winter gives it the best chance of establishing by spring.

AlgoClear Pro Hard Surface Cleaner

AlgoClear Pro removes moss and algae from patios, paths, walls and roofs. Wetter autumn conditions accelerate algae and moss growth on hard surfaces, making this a useful addition to your seasonal routine.

Safety Clothing PPE Bundle

The PPE Bundle includes coveralls, gloves and face protection. If you're applying multiple products across a session, it keeps you protected throughout.
