Why does my lawn need treatment in winter?
Grass growth slows significantly in winter, but the plant is still biologically active below the surface. Cold, wet conditions and limited daylight create three specific issues:

A lawn left untreated through winter tends to come out the other side patchy, pale and moss-ridden, with a slower spring recovery than a lawn that had winter support.

What does the Autumn/Winter Fertiliser do?
What is in the A1 Lawn Autumn/Winter Fertiliser?
The fertiliser has an NPK ratio of 6-5-10 plus 6% iron (Fe). NPK stands for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) – the three primary nutrients in any fertiliser. This is the same fertiliser used in the Autumn Lawncare Pack, and it remains appropriate through winter because its low-nitrogen, high-potassium profile suits both seasons.
Why does this fertiliser have less nitrogen than spring products?
High nitrogen pushes soft leafy growth, which is the opposite of what a lawn needs going into or through winter. Soft growth is more vulnerable to frost damage and disease. This formula reduces nitrogen and raises potassium instead, supporting strength and resilience rather than growth that the lawn doesn't need at this time of year.
What does potassium do for grass in winter?
Potassium strengthens cell walls, which directly improves a lawn's tolerance to cold, frost and wet conditions. A lawn with adequate potassium reserves going into winter holds up better against the stresses of the season and recovers faster once spring growth begins.
Why does the fertiliser contain iron?
The iron content (6Fe) supports chlorophyll production, helping the lawn maintain a deeper green colour during a period when low light levels would otherwise cause it to fade. It also has a mild moss-suppressing effect at soil level, which is a useful secondary benefit during the months when moss is most likely to spread.
How do I apply the Autumn/Winter Fertiliser in winter?
Apply evenly at 25–35g per m² using a lawn spreader for the most even coverage, though careful hand application works too. Apply before rainfall is forecast so the granules wash naturally into the soil. If no rain falls within 24 hours, water lightly each day until the granules dissolve.

No, do not apply to frosty ground, wait until the lawn has fully thawed and dried before applying. Applying to frozen or frosty grass risks the granules sitting on the surface rather than reaching the soil, and can also damage frozen grass blades underfoot.

Sul Fe is an iron sulphate treatment that can be used year-round but is particularly effective in winter. It does two things at once: it greens up the lawn by boosting chlorophyll-related colour, and it weakens moss by blackening it, making it easier for the lawn to outcompete over time.

Iron sulphate doesn't kill moss instantly the way a dedicated moss killer does. Instead, it scorches and blackens moss, weakening its growth and making the lawn area less favourable for it to spread. Used regularly through winter, it reduces moss presence as part of an ongoing maintenance routine rather than a one-off treatment.
How do I apply Sul Fe?
Mix 50g with 1 litre of water to treat 25m². Apply evenly using a sprayer or a watering can. Greening effects can take longer to show in colder temperatures, so don't expect the same speed of result you'd see in milder months.

Can I use Sul Fe at other times of year, not just winter?
Yes. Iron sulphate is suitable for use throughout the year, not just winter. Many lawn owners use it as a general greening and moss-management tool whenever colour or moss is an issue, though its moss-weakening effect is especially useful during the wetter winter months when moss spreads fastest.

Do I need to mow my lawn in winter?
