Your A1 Lawn Starter Lawncare Pack Product Guide
Everything you need to prepare, seed and establish a healthy lawn, from moss control to new grass care.
Your A1 Lawn Starter Pack – Prepare Your Lawn for Successful Seeding
Achieving strong, healthy grass starts well before the seed goes down. Successful lawn establishment relies on three key factors: moisture, correct soil temperature, and good seed-to-soil contact. Careful preparation gives grass seed the best possible chance to germinate, establish strong roots and develop into a dense, healthy lawn.
Before you begin, ensure your existing lawn is cut to around 1 inch, and that temperatures are forecast to remain above 10°C for the next 2–3 weeks.
Step-by-Step Lawn Preparation
Control Moss
- Moss commonly appears after autumn and winter and can prevent grass seed from making contact with the soil.
- Treat moss using Sul-Fe (Iron Sulphate) to blacken and weaken it
- Also helps improve lawn colour by greening the grass.
Scarify Your Lawn
- Once moss has been treated, it should be removed. Scarifying is the most effective method, raking out blackened moss and dead organic matter (thatch) to open up the surface for new growth.
Aerate the Lawn
- Aeration improves drainage and airflow to the roots, which is particularly important during wet or unpredictable weather.
- Use a hollow tine aerator or a garden fork
- Focus on compacted areas
Weed Control
- Weeds should be controlled before seeding to reduce competition.
- Use Kurtail Lawn selective herbicide, which targets most common lawn weeds without harming grass
- Apply when weeds are actively growing in warm, moist conditions
- Important: Apply at least 6 weeks before or after seeding.
Apply a Top Dressing
- A thin layer of topsoil helps improve seed-to-soil contact and protects seed from birds while aiding moisture retention.
