Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply fertiliser?

This depends on the type of fertiliser. Granular fertilisers are best applied with a spreader, while liquid lawn feeds should be used with a sprayer for even coverage. Always follow the recommended application rates listed on the product. If you're fertilising your garden, please refer to our guide on how to fertilise a lawn.

Can I use the same fertiliser for lawns, plants and paddocks?

No – different areas need different nutrient balances. Lawn fertilisers are designed to support grass growth, plant fertilisers often include micronutrients for flowering and foliage, while paddock fertilisers are designed to be safe for grazing animals. Choose a product suited to your specific area.

What’s the best fertiliser for a new lawn?

Use a fertiliser high in phosphorus to encourage strong root development – like our Pre-Seed & Turf Fertiliser. It helps new grass establish faster and more evenly. We also recommend a seasonal fertiliser, as they are specially formulated to bring out the best in your grass even when weather conditions are harsh.

How often should I fertilise?

Lawns typically benefit from fertilising every 2–3 months depending on the season. Plants may need feeding more regularly during their growing phase, while paddocks can be treated 2–4 times a year based on grazing rotation and soil condition.

Can I fertilise in winter?

Yes – but use fertilisers that are formulated for cold weather. Our autumn and winter lawn fertilisers are designed to strengthen roots and improve disease resistance during dormant months. Avoid standard high-nitrogen lawn feeds in winter. To keep your lawn healthy over the colder months, refer to our winter lawn care guide.

Can over-fertilising cause damage?

Yes. Over-fertilising can lead to scorch, yellowing, or even root damage. This can be caused by using too much product or applying it too often. Always water well after fertiliser application and stick to the guidelines.

How do you feed a lawn properly?

Feeding a lawn involves applying the right fertilisers at the correct time of year to promote healthy grass growth. Use a spring or summer lawn fertiliser to encourage green, leafy growth, and an autumn fertiliser to strengthen roots. Apply evenly using a spreader and water in after application where required. Always follow the recommended application rates to avoid overfeeding.

What is the best fertiliser for feeding a lawn?

The best fertiliser depends on the season and lawn condition. High nitrogen law feed is ideal for spring and summer growth, while autumn fertilisers are higher in potassium to improve root strength and resilience. Feed and weed products are useful where weed control is also required.
