General Tasks for March

  • Get prepared for slugs and snails, making sure that you have measures in place to keep them away from plants. Check out Sluxx to help gain control
  • Start looking out for weeds and applying weed control products suitable for the time of year. View our weed control range to find the right product for your needs
  • Service your garden tools ready for the busier months ahead.
  • March is the best time to start prep work in your garden before sowing anything or even going ahead with your first cut of the year - keep an eye out for moss and other debris that may be present
  • Resurface your paths before the plants regrow to prevent it being smothered
  • Fancy a flower garden? Explore our range of wildflowers and make your garden into a colourful oasis

Lawns and Turfed Areas

  • Check the lawn for disease activity and treat accordingly. Explore our range of fungicides
  • Try to avoid causing compaction of the soil as much as possible so if the ground is wet, avoid walking on it that day
  • Increase the amount you are mowing, however stick to leaving the grass 12mm for ornamental use and 18mm for general use
  • Scarify your lawn to remove any thatch and moss that may have built up over the past few months. Read our blog on how to scarify your lawn if you would like some tips
  • Aerate the lawn using a hollow tine rake (if possible)
  • Apply suitable fertilisers for the time of year. For the early stages of the season, an early spring fertiliser is best. Alternatively, explore our full range of spring fertilisers here
  • Begin moss treatments if moss is present. See our range of lawn moss treatment options
  • If the weather is looking agreeable, you can start laying some new turf! See below for our best sellers at this time of year, or shop our whole range of grass seed

Trees, Shrubs and Hedges

  • Check for any wind damage and make sure that ties and stakes are still intact (root rot). Use Arbor Gold fertiliser to support the regrowth of damaged plants
  • Planting of bare-root trees and shrubs (this includes fruit trees, fruit bushes and hedging materials) can be done this month
  • Prune roses and late-flowering shrubs
  • Move any of your deciduous trees and shrubs if the soil isn't frozen or waterlogged

Beds and Borders

Wall Plants and Bulbs

  • Continue planting new-climbing plants if not finished last month
  • In the south where it is a bit warmer, you may be able to start planting summer-flowering bulbs such as gladioli and lilies

Managing Water Features in March

  • Many have a water feature in their gardens, whether that be a pond or a small fountain. This is the ideal time to get it ready to use again by removing any dead stems, leaves and weeds that may have found their way into the pond/water feature over the autumn/winter
  • Replant aquatic plants as needed

Soil Analysis

It's still a great time to have your soil analysed before the planting season gets fully underway. Analysing your soil helps you to understand which nutrients are required and which products are best to use on your soil. Our team of experts offer easy-to-use soil analysis with easy-to-understand results. Check out our range of soil analysis.

What Can You Plant in the Garden in March?

  • Outdoors: This month you can start getting outdoors and planting vegetation such as carrots, beetroot and broad beans.
  • Greenhouse: Tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and cucumbers are among many that you can plant in your greenhouse this month.
  • Potatoes: You can even plant early varieties of potatoes in March

Wildflowers and Wildlife

  • Now is a great time to start planting wildflowers to allow them to flourish as the months start to warm up.
  • Wildflowers have many benefits such as flood and pollution management and environmental. Keep your garden bee-friendly by growing, sowing or planting pollinator-friendly flowers
  • We would recommend getting rid of any weeds in the area before planting. If you have any questions on wildflowers don't hesitate to get in touch.
  • Check out our full range of wildflower seeds, with many different mixes and breeds available.
  • Continue feeding the birds, mix up their food and see what kind of birds will come for a visit
  • Keep a clean source of drinking water for the birds, this is important in the colder months as their primary source may be frozen
