Selontra: A brand new, highly effective rodent control option

Selontra is an exciting new product that boasts three times faster control than anticoagulant rodenticides, a very small likelihood of rodents developing resistance and a very low risk of secondary poisoning to other animals. Used in the correct way this product is a far cheaper and more effective product than previous anticoagulant rodenticides.

How does Selontra achieve faster control?

Control can be being achieved in as little as 7 days thanks to its high palatability, unique mode of action and ‘stop feeding’ effect. Selontra is made with highly palatable ingredients, with 99% of the block being made up of foods found within a rodent’s normal diet. Studies have shown that rodents significantly prefer this to anticoagulant baits, silage/animal feed, and beef burgers.

The ‘stop feeding’ effect will kick in after 24 hours and this will prevent any more bait the the required lethal dose being consumed. This is caused by calcium deposits in the stomach and this has the benefit of saving money whilst also achieving an efficient level of successful control at the same time.

Why is resistance unlikely to develop?

Selontra contains Cholecalciferol, this is a substance found in mammals that is required to carry out important physiological processes within rodents. It is highly unlikely that resistance will develop due to Cholecalciferol being used in a key process that rodents require to function, and would lead to huge negative consequences if resistance was to develop. Studies have shown that secondary poisoning is a minimal risk to non-target species that predate on and consume rodent bodies, with 100% of birds observed showing no signs of illness or negative effects from doing so.

How to use Selontra for optimum control

Bait points should be placed near to sites of rodent activity and potential food sources. For mice bait should be placed at 1-2m intervals and for rats at 5-10m intervals. The maximum amount of bait as per the product label should be placed, this is crucial due to the stop feeding effect. If the bait runs out before a lethal dose is consumed then this could allow the rodent to survive and then develop bait shyness, which would mean that they will not want to consume any more bait due to the perceived danger. Each bait point should be checked every 1-2 days to avoid this happening, and bait replenished where it is found to be low or empty. Following this procedure should achieve a good level of control within 7 days. Further visits can be carried out to top up bait up to a maximum of 35 days. A reassessment of the situation will be required after this time if the issue is still prevalent.
