April Gardening Jobs
April is the first full month of spring which gives us a lot more to think about when it comes to garden maintenance. There are many different jobs that need to be completed to ensure that your garden is looking the best it can and stays that way throughout the spring and summer months. Take a look at our guide to see what you should be doing during this month.
General Tasks for April
- Continue controlling slugs and snails ensuring that they are not eating any plants
- For guidance on this, check out our slugs and snails control guide
- Weed growth will start to increase - apply appropriate weed control where needed
- Explore our weed control options here
- If you require guidance on what you should use, see our by problem pages for detailed guides
Lawns/Turfed Areas
- Keep an eye out for weed invasions within your lawn. If you notice any weed growth, an appropriate selective weed killer should be used to target the weeds and leave the grass unharmed
- Increase how often you are mowing the lawn. You will now be able to cut the grass a little lower than you have been (weather/temperature permitting) – around 6-8mm for ornamental use and 12mm for general use
- Apply a suitable fertiliser for the time of year and one that benefits your lawn
- Control moss if it is present in the turf
- Overseed bare patches to prevent weeds colonising the soil
Trees, shrubs and hedges
- Water newly planted trees and shrubs and apply a slow release fertiliser such as Arbor Gold
- Planting of conifers and broadleaved evergreen hedges can begin
- Prune early-flowering shrubs and feed
Beds and Borders
- Stake tall-growing plants
- Continue re-planting summer-flowering plants
- Try Maxicrop Complete for seaweed and fertiliser energy in one product
- Maintain beds and borders making sure that they are kept tidy
- Cut back lavender, but only back to new leaves. Thin out any dead leaves
