Autumn/Winter Gardening Jobs

Autumn/Winter Gardening Jobs

With autumn well and truly upon us and winter just around the corner, it is time to think about the various jobs that need to be completed before we reach the harsher winter temperatures. With frosty nights upon us it is essential we get everything in order to protect our gardens, paddocks or allotments for another year. So what jobs do we need to complete?

Gathering Leaves

Ensuring that you have gathered all of the leaves up from turfed areas is an extremely important job. If left on the grass, leaves can cause fungal diseases due to the damp conditions they create when on the lawn. Once they have been collected, leaves can then be dampened and put in a bin bag to create leaf mould. Making leaf mould is a great way of getting use out of fallen leaves as it can used as compost, mulch and autumn top dressing amongst other uses depending on how old the leaf mould is.

Cleaning patios, paths and decking

At this time of year patios, paths and decking can become slippery and hazardous as a result of the growth of algae on its surface. The best way to reduce slipperiness of the algae is to clean it using a softwashing solution. We recommend using AlgoClear Pro to clean the algae from this hard surface. For more information on how to do this, check out our by problem page here.

Servicing Equipment

This time of year is perfect for servicing your garden equipment as it generally won’t be getting used again until the first signs of spring so any issues can be rectified before it is needing to be used again. When it comes to servicing equipment such as your knapsack sprayer, time and care should be taken as this could increase the life of the equipment saving you from purchasing a new one sooner than expected. Protecting Sensitive Plants

As we have discussed, even during autumn the weather conditions will be getting harsher and temperatures will be dropping therefore it is essential that any sensitive plants that should not be out in cold temperatures are brought in to greenhouses. If they are a plant that cannot be moved, their pots should be wrapped with horticultural fleece or bubble wrap in order to protect them from frost damage and to insulate vulnerable plant roots.

As you can see there are many different jobs that need completing in order to get your garden ready for the winter and each job is just as important as another.
