February Gardening Jobs
As February comes around, gardeners everywhere start feeling hopeful for warmer weather and have a renewed enthusiasm to tackle their gardening tasks. Despite the cold temperatures of February, there are still plenty of jobs that need to be done in order to prepare a garden for the months ahead. Knowing what is appropriate to do during this month can be tricky though; this guide will help you understand which gardening tasks are suitable for February.
General Tasks For February
- Whilst the ground is wet, avoid standing on it as much as possible to help avoid compaction of the soil. Even aeration, or spiking of turf, should only be done when soils are dry
- Check that all pieces of equipment are in working order ready for the months to come
Take a look at our range of accessories and spare parts for sprayers - Ensure paths and pavements are kept clean and algae free so that they are safe to walk on and not a trip or a slip hazard
Explore our range of softwashing products here - The colder months are an ideal time for doing a soil analysis to see what your soil requires. Includes a recommendation for products to improve your lawn, paddock or vegetable plot
See our range of soil analysis kits here to find the perfect one for your situation
Lawns / Turfed Areas
- Check for disease and treat accordingly - Check out our range of fungicides
- Continue removing worm casts where possible. Hint: wait till they are dry before brushing;
Amvista Squirm Soil Conditioner is an ideal, non-pesticidal product to help in this. - You may begin to see moss in your grass which can be treated if the weather is not too frosty. Granules or liquids are available to treat it and prepare you lawn ready for spring;
Amvista Sul-Fe can be used all year round for this - Most grass seed need 8-10 degrees Celsius to grow. Patch gaps in your lawn with a new option that germinates as low as 5degrees Celsius: see Amvista Winter Grass seed here
Trees, Shrubs and Hedges
- Ensure that trees, shrubs and hedges have been checked for wind damage (root rock)
Use Arbor Gold fertiliser to support regrowth of wind damaged plants - Stop woody trees and shrubs re-growing after cutting by using clean, efficient Ecoplugs - See the revolutionary Ecoplug stump control here
- Trim winter-flowering hedges
- Box Blight can strike box hedging in wet weather and should be addressed promptly when found - Read our help guide here
- Hardy evergreens can be pruned during this month but more sensitive species should be left for the time being
- Prune trees to improve shape and overall health and any overgrown or misshapen hedges
